Not Happy With The New Wheel of Fortune

Change is inevitable, and sometimes change is good, but change can be difficult to accept after 41 seasons (8,000 episodes) of a classic TV game show.

Television producers have a bad habit of making change when it’s not needed. Examples of this include The Flintstones adding The Great Gazoo, Scooby Doo adding Scrappy, and Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch (if you don’t know these references, you’re sadly missing out). In the case of Wheel of Fortune, they had no choice on making a host change, but they took it a little overboard with everything else.

Pat Sajak, the former host of Wheel of Fortune, retired in September, 2024. Pat was replaced by Ryan Seacrest. Ryan is the former host of American Idol, Live with Regis & Kelly, and various radio programs (he was a radio DJ before getting into TV). I am not opposed to Seacrest being the new host of the show, but his transition brought other unneeded changes.

The show lasted 41 seasons, so something must have been working with it’s model. With a new host, the producers decided to drastically change the set, which now looks obnoxious. Supposedly it’s a tribute to the show’s history and a ploy to make the set more modern, but the new design makes it hard to watch because there are too many distractions.

There are now flashy LED lights and a LED lighted floor, a new logo, sunburst shapes spinning behind everyone, the puzzle board has a new border, and the contestant area and wheel were moved closer to the center of the studio leaving a bunch of space behind the contestants. There are way too many things going on in the background. It causes eye strain to watch.

Next, the producers changed the on screen images of the contestants. Where they used to focus on one contestant, you now have to watch three boxes on the screen seeing all the contestants at once. Viewers at home are not watching the show to see what the other contestants reactions are. We want to make fun of the primary player who is answering stupidly and we want to solve the puzzle before them, so just show the puzzle!

I’ve always enjoyed my nightly Wheel watching, but I’ve not been watching it since September. It’s doubtful any of the Wheel producers are reading this, but if so, know that I am not pleased. Also know that I’m not alone in this concern. Others are far more angry than I am.

Is this yet of another of the first world problems I complain about? Of course it is, but it’s a big one. Wheel of Fortune is a big part of American pop culture that, like so many other things in our society, is dwindling away.
