The pizza chain did something that is sure to make some people happy…
When I was a kid in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Pizza Hut was THE place to go. Having my birthday party there was a always something I looked forward to. Getting a delicious pan pizza delivered to the table in a skillet so hot you’d get burned without even touching it and playing Ms. Pac Man or Galaga on the sit down game console are memories that will last forever. But in the late 90’s, something happened to classic Hut we all knew and loved.
The 1990s showed tremendous growth with the chain, exponentially expanding their restaurants worldwide. Growth can be good for shareholders, but it’s often bad for customers. In this case, that’s exactly what happened. The Hut choose quantity over quality, and it didn’t go over well.

Pizza Hut restaurants used to make their dough fresh at each location. As a cost saving measure, they decided to start using frozen dough shipped in. They also decided to tweak the sauce recipe as well as changing the cheese they used. They began using cheaper ingredients and even changed the way they cooked pizzas. This completely changed the classic flavor of their pizzas.
I did a little research and found Pizza Hut has changed their recipe multiple times since the 1980s (not counting novelty pizzas, which would mean there were LOTS of changes). None of the changes ever compared to how it used to be and many people, including me, strayed from the beloved chain. They tried to update the pan pizza recipe in 2019 to make it taste more like the old, but it wasn’t quite right.

In early 2026, Pizza Hut changed a dough recipe again. In February the chain announced changes to their hand tossed dough, making it lighter and airier with a fluffier, less dense crust. This was a good move, and surprisingly, it’s actually pretty good. It’s not a return to what they were, but it is a huge change that will surely make many people like their pizza again.
Some people who like Pizza Hut the way it was before February, not ever knowing what it used to taste like, may not be pleased with the new flavor, but for fans of the old, it is should be a welcome change.

The new flavor profile is very noticeable (you don’t even need to eat Pizza Hut often to notice the change). It just tastes good, which is something you don’t often say when mentioning the big pizza chains.
Will it get me to sway from the local “mom & pop” pizza shops? Probably not, but it will be a good option when I need something quick and cheap. I’ll definitely be more likely to indulge in the Hut than I was before though.
Hopefully Pizza Hut can get back to the cult status they once had. I doubt it will ever be as good as it once was, but improving beyond what they changed into is a definite plus. Check it out – I think you might be surprised too.
