Conversations With My Dog

Sometimes dogs have pretty enlightening things to say…

We look at dogs as our pets and we have historically referred to ourselves as their “masters”, or keepers, but my dog pointed out humans have completely misinterpreted this concept.

My dog pointed out that we (humans) are clearly subservient to them (dogs)…

We are at their service for every aspect of their lives. We provide them with shelter by giving them a place to live. We feed them, we bathe, we groom them, and we clean up their messes. We care for them when they are sick, and if we are good “pet” owners, we spoil them in various ways when they’re good.

We let them out when they want to go, and we play when they want to play. They take over our homes, including sprawling across our couches and beds. In other words, they pretty much do whatever they want.

My dog pointed out all this happens because it’s his house. He stated we may pay for the house, but he is the king, and that’s that. We are merely his servants.

As I pondered this, I realized he was right and neither of us would change it for anything.

This might be hard for other cultures to accept, but dogs really do control us. We may put a leash on them for walks, but they have us on a leash for everything else (pun intended). Regardless of who is in charge, dogs are family and deserve everything they get.

He agreed with that as he gave me a big sloppy dog kiss on my cheek and said, “I love you dad.”

I said, “I love you too buddy”, as he went back to doing what he was doing (laying sprawled out on the bed thinking how good it is good to be the king).

Well, that explains a lot, really. This whole country is going to the dogs.
