When it comes to success in life, regardless of what you choose to do, you usually need to have luck or skill. It doesn’t hurt to have both, but what happens if you don’t have either?
Life throws many variables at us which we can’t control, or have minimal control over. Luck falls into this category. No matter how much we think we can, we can’t make or alter luck. Even with the best rabbit’s foot or other lucky charm, luck is still purely about random chance. We can maybe slightly shift the odds to our favor in some situations, but there are still plenty of variables which prohibit us from having total control.
When it comes to skill, I know many people who are highly skilled at what they do or very talented, but they settled for a life of mediocrity because they never got the right opportunity to showcase their abilities. The reasons why they never got an opportunity may vary, but the simple fact is not everyone will be successful. Some are happy not taking things to the next level, but what if you want to?
What is it that sets successful people apart from others who try but never succeed?
People often say, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” There is probably a little bit of truth to this, but what if you don’t know anyone. What if you’re shy and don’t like talking to people? There’s also the saying about being in the right place at the right time, but both of these sayings are no different than luck. With both of these, you’re passively hoping for something to just happen without putting any effort in to get it. I think the answer to success is not so much about what you know, who you know, or luck.
It’s about how bad you want something.
As I struggled with my adventures in life, I’ve often been given one consistent piece of advice which I always thought was silly;
“Fake it until you make it.”
It took me a while to truly understand this statement, but the more I thought about it the more I realized how true the statement is. Have you ever seen people in positions who are inexperienced and shouldn’t be where they are. Have you ever wondered how they got there? Sometimes they got there because they wanted it more than others. Even if they had no talent, skills, or experience, they believed they did and it was enough to convince others.
Some may call it fraud, but it’s a feeling of confidence.
Some call it manifestation. Others call it visualization. Whatever you call it, it’s all in your head. You have to become what you want to be because the vast majority of any struggle is mental. If you can’t convince yourself, how are you going to convince others? You have to want it and you have to do what it takes to get it.
This means actively seeking the opportunities to put yourself into.
The problem that arises is work because very little in life comes easy. You can’t lie about qualifications so you’ll have to actually do something to align yourself with what you want to be. You have to act in accordance with what you hope to be because if you do nothing, you will probably end up with nothing. I believe laziness or motivation is what makes the difference in what we get out of life.
You can’t rely on chance.
It’s okay to hang on to the hope of chance, faith, or whatever you call it, but not solely. You have to immerse yourself in what you wish to become. “Faking” it simply means you are taking charge of your direction rather than waiting for something, or someone, to do it for you.
Personally, I want to be Batman. It’s doubtful someone is going to come to my door offering me the opportunity to be Batman, but I can go buy a Batman suit and I can become Batman. Some may try to tell me I’m not the real Batman, but the joke will be on them because I will know I’m Batman (and yes, I have the qualifications to back it). I may not have his superpowers, but in theory, I CAN be Batman.
If I’m wearing the suit, I’ll feel like Batman, and that’s what counts.
If I carry myself appropriately as Batman, others will think I’m him. It’s all about the image.
Do I have a point with this post? As always, not really. I was just thinking about the fake it til you make it thing and wanted to post something positive for a change. I get tired of my own complaining and whining sometimes and have to reflect on things to motivate myself. Today, I figured I’d motivate others as well.
Build yourself up and go be what you want to be, because even if you don’t get to be 100% successful, it’s still fun to play pretend. And, if you end up being even moderately successful in the process, it’s a win. If nothing else, become a legend in your own mind or rule your neighborhood as a crime fighter.
Both are entertaining.
Go forth and be successful.
