Pizza Delivery is Going Airborne

Pizza will soon be logging more frequent flier miles than humans…

Pizza delivery is starting to look less like a part-time job and more like a sci-fi movie. Major pizza chains are now testing drone deliveries, which means your next pepperoni pizza could literally fall from the sky instead of showing up in the backseat of a Honda Civic. And honestly, pizza might be the perfect food for this kind of experiment.

Think about it: pizza already comes in a secure box, people expect it fast, and efficient delivery has always been the entire business model of pizzerias. Long before Uber Eats and DoorDash existed, pizza companies were obsessing over technology to improve delivery times and order efficiency. Whoever had the most high-tech set up gained the delivery advantage. At this point, some pizza chains feel more like logistics startups that also happen to sell delicious eats. Going forward, drones just might be the competitive edge needed for restaurants.

Amazon is already doing drone deliveries in some areas, so it seems only natural the pizza business would catch on with the same technology. The wild part is that most customers probably don’t care about the technology at all. Nobody’s sitting at home thinking, “I hope a drone brings my dinner tonight.” People just want a hot pizza that tastes good, doesn’t cost a fortune, and arrives at our door sooner than later.

The drone delivery concept may seem a little strange now, but just like how we had to get used to online ordering instead of actually calling someone to place an order, if drones can avoid traffic and drop off food faster than a delivery driver, most people will stop thinking it’s weird the first time a steaming hot pizza lands on their doorstep.

And if this actually works, pizza could end up changing way more than dinner. The same systems being tested for pizza today could eventually deliver our groceries, medicine, and other things we probably haven’t thought of yet.

The next generation of kids might think pizza drivers were just a myth we made up as drivers become obsolete. Is this the future? Maybe. At least we can save a few dollars on tipping, right?
