Platte City is a small, close-knit community just north of Kansas City. Known for its historic downtown and strong hometown pride, it’s the kind of place where pizza becomes part of the community.
Don MacCuish felt Platte City was lacking on pizza choices. He and his family decided to do something about it. The result is The Cove, a restaurant built around authentic hand-tossed New York style pizza, good food, cold drinks and the idea of giving people in the community a comfortable place to gather.
Pirates Need Pizza
The name fits Platte City particularly well. “The Cove” is a play on a pirate theme, since the nearby Platte County High School teams are known as the Pirates. The restaurant even uses the phrase “Where Pirates Gather,” which pretty well sums up what the MacCuish family was hoping to create – a place where local families, friends and sports fans can meet for a meal or just hang out to watch a game.
The Pizza is Legit.
New York style pizza can make or break a business. A great New York slice should have a crisp crust with tangy sauce, and bubbling, slightly browned cheese. Fold it in half, take a bite, and you should get that perfect mix of crunch and chew.
The Cove Nails It.
When I say The Cove is legit, I mean it ranks pretty high on my list of best New York style slices around the Kansas City area. I wouldn’t say that if it wasn’t the real thing. The house made sauce is amazing, and the crust is about as good as it gets to make you feel like you’re in Manhattan. They offer a 12″ and an 18″, so the sizes are just right. Further, there are plenty of topping combos that are sure to please even the pickiest pizza eater.
Don’s pizza background goes back to his younger years working in pizza restaurants in Florida, long before he spent 24 years serving in the U.S. Army. The restaurant is very much a family operation. Don’s son Donny helps lead the business, daughter Emma handles social media and communications, and son Evan has helped develop the menu. Grandson Kooper even inspired the kids’ menu.
That local feel may be one of the best things about The Cove. The family wasn’t looking to bring another chain restaurant to town. They wanted to create something of their own for Platte City. The community apparently agreed with the idea. The restaurant was so busy during its first month they occasionally ran out of food trying to keep up. For a place that started because its owner thought Platte City needed another good pizza option. The Cove seems to have found its crew pretty quickly.
Pizza may be the main attraction, but the menu goes quite beyond that. The Cove also serves smash burgers, sandwiches, wings, salads and other casual favorites. Everyone in the family will be able to find something they like on the menu.
Located at 524 Birch Street, just off I-29 northwest of Kansas City, The Cove is an easy stop on your pizza travels map. Stop by to enjoy a slice and to meet the owner. If you do, thank him for his service to our nation, but also for bringing a winning pizza concept to the area.
